Rakim To Receive Award At "Aquarians Give Back" Benefit For At-Risk Youth

Rakim and his legendary status in Hip-Hop is solidified and now, the God MC is set to receive an award from a New York-based youth group for his achievements in the game.

Freedom Williams, of C+C Music Factory fame, is putting on an event, “Aquarians Give Back,” and will grant Rakim with the Aquarius Award for Consciousness and Global Awareness award.
The “Aquarians Give Back” fundraiser and event will benefit the Youth At Risk organization, which offers mentoring, educational support and other services for children in the New York region.
Williams, who featured on the C+C Music Factory's hit song “Gonna Make You Sweat,” was homeless at the time when he wrote the track.

Now, he gives back to youth in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn as a mentor and feeds the homeless through the city's five boroughs.

Williams explains why he chose Rakim for the first Freedom Williams Aquarius Award for Consciousness and Global Awareness award.

“This award has been in the making for several years and Rakim is receiving the first of many to be given out,” says Williams. “Nas is dope, Kool G Rap is a legend; Big Daddy Kane and Jay-Z are game changers.

But no other emcee has had an influence on the art form and left such a lasting impression on global music like Rakim.” The event takes place at Manhattan's Flatiron Hotel on February 13 at 8:00 PM.

Ballad of Damon Dash - The Crown Prince Of The Bling Era

He was the crown prince of the Bling Era, a Svengali who turned his friend and partner Jay-Z into a superstar, signed Kanye West, and built a business empire that extended far beyond hip-hop.

Then he split with Hova, and bit by bit, the mercurial mogul began to lose it all—his label, his wife, his homes, and the figurative shirt off his back. Today, as Jay-Z towers over the culture, the 42-year-old Dash insists he's right where he wants to be: hustling and hungry.


DAMON DASH STANDS ON NEW YORK City's Lower East Side and shivers. It's the first wintry night in November, and the 42-year-old former hip-hop mogul, with gray chin stubble and a low-riding cap—the man who cofounded Roc-A-Fella Records with then-best friend Jay-Z—jams a fist into his pocket and braces against the wind.

"This is reality-show drama," says Dash, kicking the gummy sidewalk as he checks his iPhone. He's come from the basement of the Mercury Lounge, where Jim Jones, the rapper he is promoting later tonight, is holed up between the boiler and some empty beer crates. Surrounded by a dozen or so hangers-on and wreathed in a cloud of pot smoke, Jones is trying hard to learn the lyrics of his own songs.

The drummer Dash hired has no cymbals and is racing around the city to find a set. Dash's showcase is starting to look like amateur hour. "Shit is wack," he says.

But shit wasn't always this wack. At the height of his power, Dash presided over a cultural empire without peer.

He jump-started Jay-Z's career from the trunk of his car, selling the rapper's discs when no one would sign him.

Together with a third partner, Kareem "Biggs" Burke, they launched Roc-A-Fella in 1995, released Jay's seminal first album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996, and produced nine No. 1 albums together.

Dash also discovered Kanye West, Cam'ron, and Beanie Sigel. And he built his brainchild Rocawear into a fashion brand that brought in a reported $400 million a year in revenue.

Yet to many, Damon Dash will always be the man left behind, the Steve Wozniak to Jay-Z's Steve Jobs.

When Dash and Jay split in 2004—after two years of clashing egos—Hova moved up the corporate ladder to be president of Def Jam and took Roc-A-Fella Records with him.

A year later he bought Dash's share of Rocawear.
Dash didn't seem to care. With the multi-million-dollar checks from those buyouts—$3 million–plus for Roc-A-Fella, $7 million for Rocawear—he had money to burn, and burn it he did: on private chefs and jets, butlers and bodyguards; two lofts in Tribeca, a mansion in Beverly Hills, a $35,000-a-month London apartment, and a $400,000 Maybach.

But then shit really did get wack. And amid a series of high-profile repossessions, foreclosures, liens, and press hits that have painted him as a pauper, Dash has tried to rebrand himself as a downtown hipster—a Warhol in baggy jeans running a Lower East Side art collective.

Although Dash has shown flashes of his old touch—showcasing indie bands like Sleigh Bells and connecting pals like Mos Def with alt-rock darlings the Black Keys—he has presided over a series of record labels, clothing lines, Internet start-ups, vodkas, movies, sneaker brands, watches, and, inexplicably, motor oils, most of which have failed to take flight.

"We've been in a recession," Dash says by way of explanation. "These things don't crack overnight." Even as some of his businesses have limped along, he seems content to keep pumping funds into them until something—or many things—works.

 "I don't respect anyone who does not give up their own money," he says. "I don't give a fuck how much money someone else gave you to watch. That's not the game I play."
Dash isn't down-and-out, but he's not exactly living it up.

He's made the commute to tonight's show from Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he's been crashing with a friend (a few weeks later, Dash was reportedly staying in a rental building on the Lower East Side). He's here to shoot a "video look book" for Vampire Life, the clothing line he co-owns with Jones.

The idea is to get Jones to change into different outfits between songs during his set and to post video to the line's website, while presenting fans, who will be given merch to wear for the shoot, a live performance.

Coming in from the cold, Dash enters the bar and seeks out Justin Korkidis, his marketing director, part of a six-person staff that Dash relies on to design clothes, bring in street artists, film his every move, and generally hang out with him. Mostly twentysomethings, they are part of his Poppington collective, his multimedia art, fashion, and branding machine. Korkidis, sporting a knit cap, looks beleaguered.

"So what'd they say about our drink tickets?" Dash asks.
"That it has to be worked out," Korkidis says. "But it's half-price. I don't know if you want half-price?"
"Damn, that's crazy," Dash says. "We don't get no drink tickets?!"

Korkidis walks away, sulking.
"The people here are bullshit," Dash calls after him, raising his voice so the bartender can hear. "You ask or you don't get it. Tell them to get us some drink tickets. Get us some beers. Get it flowing!"

Brief Bio - Hailing from a unique cultural background consisting of American and Panamanian descent, Mike Roach (born Michael Lynn Roach) was born on March 12, 1990 in the small city of Burlington, NC.
 
Since the young age of 6, Mike Roach has lived in a single-parent household, thus allowing his upbringing to favor his mother’s Panamanian heritage. 
 
At a young age Mike developed an appreciation for the hip hop culture and music; listening to and following popular artists including Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, T.I., Juelz Santana and others.
 
Shortly after leaving school behind in 2009, Mike would move to Panama, Central America to find a new beginning. While there he started a music career, recording Dancehall and Reggaeton music with LA Records, Blok3 and Anakhin as “Mikey Mikess”.
 
In 2011, Mikey Mikess released his first single, “Su Nombre”, which garnered much attention on local radio stations in Panama City, Panama. In late 2011, he returned to Burlington, NC to start and focus on hip hop music under the moniker “Mike Roach”. Mike released his debut mixtape, “Sleep When I Die” in March of 2012.

How the music industry works

The music industry is a strange place indeed, with not even those who've been working in it for years knowing precisely what the future holds. However, systems for making money remain in place, and anyone who's thinking seriously about turning their music into cold, hard cash would do well to have at least a basic understanding of how they operate.
Hence this guide: it won't tell you everything about the music business, but it should be enough to give you a basic understanding of what makes it tick and to make you think about how you might become part of it.


Record companies

The 'traditional' path to music industry success involves your record being heard by a record label that'll sign you as an artist to release it. Better still, they'll release a body of your work which might span an EP, album or multi-album deal.
Effectively, the label acts as an investor in you and your project, paying for studio time, mixing and mastering and, hopefully, an advance, which is money up front and in your pocket to tide you over until your cut of the money from sales - known as royalties - starts coming in.
The label will also handle documentation for the release including royalty splits that detail what percentage of every pound earned gets paid to you and any co-writers and what percentage goes back to the label to cover their initial investment and, hopefully, generate a profit so that they'll be able to invest in you again.

Your cut of your music

The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) pays royalty shares on copies of your track. This means that the more units you sell, the greater the amount will be, but it also means that if your song ends up on compilation CDs, is used on DVDs or even placed inside a mechanical toy, you'll get paid.
Say a compilation album has 20 tracks on board and one of them is yours. That means you get 5% of the MCPS money generated by sales.

Publishing your music

Publishing is exploitation of your track in any form and publishing income can be gained from a wide number of sources. The term dates from when songs were literally 'published' and sold as printed sheet music but these days publishing money is earned whenever a song is played on the TV, radio or on a film soundtrack, when it's covered by another artist, when it's performed live, when it's played in Topshop's changing rooms… the list goes on.
In theory, whenever your track is aired in public you'll get paid. This system works thanks to collection agencies such as PRS in the UK or ASCAP in the US, which monitor such airings and collect and distribute the money accordingly.

TV, movies and more

One of the major growth areas in music publishing – and an increasingly important revenue booster for artists releasing their own material – is having music synced to TV, film and videogame projects. The advantages of sync are obvious: you'll be paid to have your track used; you'll generate a fresh revenue stream if your song makes it onto the film/TV show's soundtrack; and you'll raise awareness of your record as it'll reach a potentially huge audience who might not otherwise have heard your track.
Getting songs synced to TV and film projects isn't easy but there are specialist production companies who will act on your behalf to push your tracks in this direction and the majority of these act non-exclusively, so that you're able to keep doing 'other things' with your music while they're trying to push it to music supervisors at film and TV companies.
Making your catalogue of tracks available to a Library Music company (increasingly called Production Music companies) is therefore a no brainer and potentially the most lucrative thing you'll do. Typically, such a company will take a percentage of the sync fee as their payment, which is good for you as it means no money to pay them upfront to represent you and, better still, they don't get paid unless they're getting cuts, meaning they'll work the music in their catalogue as hard as they can.
Take a moment here to think about the Rembrandts' I'll Be There For You - aka the title music to Friends - and how many plays that must have racked up around the world…

Paid to play

So you didn't write or produce the track? Don't worry, you can still make money. PPL isn't a publishing stream owed to songwriters but an additional royalty stream paid by broadcasters to performers on records. Anyone who performs on your song (bass player, backing vocalists etc) is owed a small sum for his or her performance on a record. The categories for performers include Performing Producer so if you've played and programmed the track you've written, you're due a PPL royalty stream too.
Note that this is separate from a publishing stream, so doesn't eat into your royalties from elsewhere.

Distribution

One of the key weapons the majors have at their disposal is the ability, if they so desire, to put the new Kylie album on sale in every high street retailer from Sydenham to Sydney. A distributor is responsible for shipping units of records from warehouse to shop and this is a task that - if you're creating physical content - you'll need to get covered by striking a distribution deal.
As we know, 'physical' music has been overtaken in popularity by digital, which is great news if you're starting your own label, as distribution is that much easier. Digital distribution means making sure your record is available for sale digitally in all of the places your fanbase will expect to find it, which means iTunes, Amazon and the like for pop/rock releases and, additionally, specialist sites for dance music such as Beatport and Juno.
Companies such as CDBaby offer distribution to these sites and more for a one-off fee, meaning that once you've uploaded your album to a company like this, they'll do all the MP3 coding and will make your record available for sale via a variety of sites with a minimum of fuss your end.

And finally

It's a lot to take in, but with this basic understanding of the industry's mechanics in place you should be ready to go and start making it work for you.

The Quenelle – The New Sign of Resistance

For the connoisseurs of French cuisine, the word ‘Quenelle‘ is known. It is a dish made from minced fish, chicken or meat cooked in water in the form of an oval dumpling. In fact, the French word derived from the (German) word dumplings.

This article is not about the ‘haute cuisine’ but the explanation why the word ‘Quenelle’ has got a different meaning in France. 

It is the expression for ‘f**k you‘ or ‘Stick it in your ass‘. Sounds vulgar but is meant as an expression of protest against the elite.

The Quenelle is shown in which you stretch the arm straight down and indicating with the other hand as a measure of the length. The higher the hand, the longer the measure, the stronger is the symbolic expression of protest. This new meaning has invented the popular French comedian originally from Cameroon, Donne Dieudonné or ‘Dieudo’ as he is known in France. Meanwhile, the character has become very popular with the French, and is exploited ubiquitously is used for ‘f**k the system‘, ‘the state can kiss my ass‘ or ‘plug it in your ass, Mr. President‘.

The symbolism has become so popular, the French regime of Hollande is panicking and has taken measures to suppress the symbolism and even prohibit. The gesture is treated in their eyes as the Hitler salute. Nevertheless, it is shown at every opportunity.




Hip-Hop Legend Scarface Says Rap Is Sounding Stupid These Days

Scarface is a Houston hip-hop legend, and when the man speaks, people listen. The twenty-plus-year rap veteran was a pioneer for Southern artists of the next generation when he started his career with the Geto Boys back in the late 1980s.

The Houston rapper/super producer went solo in 1991, and 11 albums later, he’s left a deep imprint in the fabric of hip-hop.

So when he asked XXL during a recent phone call who stole the soul in hip-hop today, it was a question rooted in a life-long study of the culture.

“I feel like our music was dumbed down,” Scarface said on the phone on Wednesday (Jan. 15). “I feel like our generation is being dumbed down. And it starts with how we educate ourselves.

At first, we knew what was going on in Compton by the music that we heard. We knew what was going on in Chicago by the music that we made.

We knew what was going on in Houston by the music that was going on in Houston. Now, nobody don’t give a fuck. Everything sounds alike; they say the same thing.”

When comparing music now to 25 years ago, Scarface points out it just doesn’t match up. “I think that the music that I listened to turned me into the artist that I am,” he says.

“I grew up listening to great music that molded my character and my artistry, that helped me.

You got to look at it. Look at the music that came out 25 years ago. Now match it up to the music that came out today. There’s no comparison to it.

I go back to the same question that I always ask. Who stole the soul?”

The Houston O.G. knows a thing or two about soul, having used a number of classic samples in his own production and rapping work throughout the years. But, he notes, in contrast to other genres, hip-hop is also losing its wit and cleverness, sacrificing lyricism and dumbing down the music.

“The rap shit [is] sounding stupider and stupider, and country music is sounding more brilliant, rock music is sounding more brilliant and alternative music is sounding way more brilliant,” he says.

“Shit sound good as fuck. Everybody [in hip-hop] wants to turn up now; even in R&B.

Who stole the soul? The soul is gone. Twenty-five years ago it was called soul, 30 years ago it was called soul. Then they turned it into rhythm and blues, R&B. What is it now? Is R&B gone too?”

Lord Jamar Says White People "Don't Create Anything"

Exclusive: Lord Jamar also says we are heading in a direction where it will "seem odd for a black man to do Hip Hop."
In September, Lord Jamar said that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ "Same Love” pushed an agenda that he did not approve of.

In a new, exclusive interview with HipHopDX, the Brand Nubian rapper says that he doesn’t think that a White rapper should push an agenda that goes against the principles upon which Hip Hop culture was founded.

“As a White person, who is a guest to the house of Hip Hop, you don't have the right, okay, to come in and try to decide where this shit should go,” Lord Jamar says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. "Make a Rock song saying that. Make some EDM shit promoting that. Like don't try to use our vehicle, our vehicle that we created, to promote some shit that you know we don't fuck with. That's all I'm saying.

"I'm not saying White people can't make Hip Hop,” Lord Jamar continues. "I'm not saying you can't talk about pretty much what you want to talk about, but then again, there are boundaries to everything. If I'm making wine, I can't just put fucking beer in there and call it wine. It's no longer wine. It's something else. Don't try to tell me that, ‘Oh, Hip Hop is self expression.' Yeah Hip Hop is self-expression. It is all those things. You're right. But, everything has its parameters, and to say that Black people don't own this music is ridiculous. All cultures want to highlight their accomplishments and there's nothing wrong with that."

Lord Jamar says that he takes issue with the fact that things created by Black people are appropriated by White people, a practice that has taken place, in music in particular, since Black people arrived in the United States.

“They [White people] don't create anything,” Lord Jamar says. "Look at all the remakes they did. Look at all the remakes they did with movies. They're not creative. We've come up with how many different genres of music as long as we've been here, in America? And they've stolen damn-near every one, to the point [where] now it seems odd for a Black man to do Rock & Roll or Country music, when the banjo is an African instrument. They just added a few more strings. Like, knock it off. And that's where Country music comes from, and then Blues and all that type of shit. Rock & Roll was a slang for fuckin' that we came up with. Okay? And so now it seems odd, and so how many years in the future will it seem odd for a black man to do Hip Hop, the way it's going? You see what I'm saying? But what will we do? What we always do. We'll come up with some other fucking shit that'll intrigue you. Some whole next kind of music that'll have you like, 'Oh my God. How did you do that?' And you'll try to shit on it at first the way you did with Hip Hop and then when you see that it's relentless, then you'll try to co-opt it."

Snoop Dogg Will Perform In Australia Despite Petition

West Coast Hip Hop legend and pop culture icon Snoop Dogg will be able to tour in Australia this month.

Billboard reports Snoop was granted a work permit despite a women’s organization’s petition calling for him to be denied entry into the country on the grounds that his lyrics “glorify violence against women.”

This is not the first time the group known as Collective Shout has taken aim at a rap artist visiting Australia.

In June of 2013, the organization attempted to get Tyler, The Creator’s visa revoked claiming he promoted “hate speech” against women.

Other Hip Hop performers have had difficulty entering the country as well. 2 Chainz was denied entry because of a pending drug charges in the States.

With the clearance, Snoop will now be able to perform his co-headlining set at the Big Day Out Festival beginning on January 19th in Gold Coast.

The traveling concert event will also play in Melbourne on the 24th, Sydney on the 26th, Adelaide on the 31st, and Perth on February 1st.

James Avery ‪' ‎Prince Of Bel Air' Star Passed Away

James Avery, the actor who played Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," died on Tuesday, his publicist confirmed to ABC News.

The actor, 68, died from complications of open heart surgery, publicist Cynthia Snyder said. He died in Glendale, Calif.

Born James La Rue Avery in Virginia, Avery was raised in Atlantic City. After high school, he served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 as a member of the U.S. Navy. After returning home, Avery moved to San Diego, where he wrote poetry and TV scripts for PBS, including the Emmy Award-winning production, "Ameda Speaks: Poet James Avery."

However, Avery perhaps was most beloved for his acting. In addition to his most famous role on the sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," he also lent his voice to several animated TV series, including "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Iron Man." He also appeared on the big screen in films including "Dr. Dolittle 2" and "License to Drive," and hosted the travel series "Going Places" on PBS.

Most recently, Avery worked on Zach Braff's film, "Wish I Was Here," which will premiere at the Sundance film festival.

" I'm deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away," his "Fresh Prince" co-star Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted. "He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly."

Avery is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara, his stepson, Kevin Waters, and his mother, Florence.
