Jesse Jackson Jr. Is Receiving Treatment For Depression

The mystery behind Jesse Jackson Jr.'s whereabouts has finally been revealed.

The Illinois Congressman has been receiving treatment for depression at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, according to a statement released by the hospital, Friday (July 27).

According to the hospital, Jackson is also being treated for gastrointestinal issues, possibly stemming from a 2004 procedure that he had to lose weight. "Further information will be released as Congressman Jackson's evaluation proceeds," read the statement.

"Certainly some people do, as part of their depression or anxiety disorder, manifest it with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea," psychiatrist Matthew Lilly, who did his fellowship at Mayo, told the Huffington Post.

The Chicago resident, is son to civil rights figure Jesse Jackson Sr., and has been away from his post for over a month. Although he is currently at the Mayo Clinic, his representatives have yet to reveal where he was prior to arriving at the treatment center.

Some believed that Jackson was dealing with an addiction problem, issues of which were made more prevalent by the revelation that he suffered from a "mood disorder."

EPMD-Business Never Personal

Twenty years ago, EPMD released their fourth studio Business Never Personal. Eventually it would go on to become their fourth consecutive album to go Gold, but that's only part of the story.

EPMD's previous album Business As Usual was their first on Def Jam and it featured the first appearance of Redman on wax. By the summer of 1992, almost eight months into the Second Golden Era of Hip-Hop, EPMD had begun a Hip-Hop dynasty under the guise of the Hit Squad and Shuma Management.

Back in March 1992, EPMD's protégé's Das EFX emerged from the sewers with the hit single “They Want EFX.” It caught on rather quickly and spread like wildfire. Their unique rhyme style, look and the way they totally embraced being underground (which just six months previously was frowned upon by the mainstream) resonated with Rap fans.

Slightly more than a month after “They Want EFX'” exploded, Das EFX's debut, Dead Serious, dropped. The bars, production and their image caused the album to take off out of the gates.

It shot to Gold and eventually went Platinum. Everyone in Hip-Hop began to bite Das EFX, from their “iggity” rhyme style down to their fashion sense. Eventually groups even adopted the aesthetic of their production and videos. Watch Lords Of The Underground's “Psycho” video sometime then get back to me for proof.

Around the same time Das EFX's album was blasting out of cars and Sony Walkmans everywhere, K-Solo released the lead single from his upcoming album Times Up.

The song was produced by Sam Sneed and titled “I Can't Hold It Back.”  The tune would eventually shoot to the top of the Rap charts and become K-Solo's third big hit after “Spellbound” and “Your Mom's In My Business.

” Unfortunately, even with his chart success, K-Solo's albums didn't sell well. Tell The World My Name while regarded as a classic failed to move 100,000 units. Times Up dropped in June 1992 and while it was another excellent album it failed to do significantly better saleswise than his previous release.

While K-Solo's “I Can't Hold It Back” and Das EFX's “Mic Checka” are all over the radio and being featured on blend tapes and mixtapes all over, EPMD dropped their new single “Crossover”.

Business Never Personal's lead single was a damning indictment against Pop Rap and it dissed any rappers or MCs that would sell their souls or water down their sound to attain sales success. It sampled Roger Troutman in the hook and it was so funky that it actually crossed over dominating the regular Rap charts and broke into Billboard's Hot 100.

It stalled after reaching the top 50 but the NBA was playing it in their commercials. The brothers from Brentwood, Long Island had cracked the mainstream.

EPMD's Business Never Personal dropped on July 28th, 1992 and Hip Hop heads went bananas over it. The duo's production was top notch while the album's tone was hardcore but still accessible. All of the members of the burgeoning Hit Squad had appearances on the album. Das EFX appeared on “Cummin' At Cha” and K-Solo and Redman appeared on the posse cut and eventual final single from the album, “Head Banger.” Now Das EFX, K-Solo and EPMD are dominating the charts and the radio. But wait, it gets worse!

Snoop Dogg Banned from Norway for 2 Years

Officials in Norway have announced a ban on rapper Snoop Dogg for the next two years.

The ban comes on the heels of the rapper’s arrest in June of 2012, as he attempted to enter the country with marijuana.

Authorities found eight grams of marijuana on Snoop, who was arrested at the airport and fined over the incident.

As a result, officials have barred him from entering Norway for the next two years.

This is not the first country that Snoop Dogg has been hard for him.

In 2006, Snoop Dogg and his entourage were involved in a massive brawl airport officials in Heathrow Airport in London.

Snoop eventually won that case, after surveillance footage was produced that proved police were the aggressors, vindicating him in the incident.

In April of 2007 Australian officials banned Snoop from the country due to his criminal record, although they eventually reversed the decision and Issued Snoop a work visa.

Jackson Siblings Barred From Katherine Jackson's House

UPDATE: The drama between Michael Jackson's children and his siblings at Katherine Jackson's home may be more serious than previously thought.

TMZ reports new details about the physical altercation that occured between unnamed family members on Monday evening.

Apparently, slaps were exchanged between MJ's daughter Paris Jackson and her aunt Janet Jackson, who called the 14-year-old a "spoiled little bitch," and Joe Jackson's nephew Trent Jackson attempted to defend the kids against an "aggressive" Randy and Jermaine Jackson by putting Randy in a headlock and punching Jermaine in the mouth. Trent is the one who filed the missing person's report on Saturday after Paris claimed she hadn't heard from her 82-year-old grandmother Katherine in over a week.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Michael Jackson's children, Margaret Lodise, is attempting to get Tito Jackson's son T.J. Jackson temporary guardianship over the three children. It's being reported that the children are in favor of the arrangement and are very close with T.J.

Monday night, following the incident at Katherine Jackson's Calabasas, California home, T.J. tweeted to Paris, "I know it's completely unfair for them to do this to you and your brothers. We will keep trying. I love you."

Security for the Jackson kids has also been beefed up, RadarOnline.com reports.

PREVIOUS: New details have emerged about the sheriff department's response to a call of domestic disturbance at Katherine Jackson's residence on Monday evening.

The ever-present eye of TMZ has obtained a photo of Janet Jackson and Jermaine Jackson at Katherine Jackson's home on Monday, looking to be engaged in a heated argument. The photo was allegedly taken around the same time sheriffs were called to the Calabasas, California, home and took a report of physical abuse between two unnamed family members.

The sheriff's department won't say if the altercation they responded to was between Janet and her brother Jermaine. However, RadarOnline.com reports that the siblings, along with brother Randy Jackson, have been barred from their 82-year-old mother's home after they attempted to forcibly remove Michael Jackson's children from the home.

The situation is the latest episode in the family dispute over Katherine Jackson's whereabouts and, allegedly, the execution of Michael Jackson's will. "It was just total chaos when Jermaine, Randy and Janet descended on the house," a source tells Radar.

"Randy was telling Prince Michael he had to leave with them and that he had a private jet chartered to take them all to Arizona to see Katherine. Prince firmly held his ground and told Randy he wasn't going anywhere with them," the source continued.

"The security detail prevented the three of them from taking the kids out of state. The cops had to be called and Janet kept saying [the siblings] had a legal right to be at the house when in fact they don't. The rental house is in the name of Michael Jackson's estate, so they were told to leave immediately. For the time being, they won't be allowed to come back to the rental house and guards at the security gate have been told under no circumstances are they to allow them in."

Taking the drama the hardest seems to be Michael Jackson's eldest daughter, Paris Jackson. Earlier in the day, Paris tweeted, "8 days and counting . something is really off , this isn’t like her at all .. i wanna talk directly to my grandmother!!<|3"

Radar's source tells the site, "Paris was absolutely hysterical and kept telling her uncles to just bring her grandmother home."

"Michael's children are being cared for by their nanny and legal options are being explored about ensuring their safety. The children are very, very smart and they are surrounded by excellent bodyguards that won't allow anything unsavory to happen to them. The kids just want their grandmother back, and want the family drama to end. Now that Paris and Prince are old enough, they understand why Michael didn't have much of a relationship with anyone in the family except for Katherine," the source says.

Regarding the legal options, the Jackson children met with their court-appointed attorney Margaret Lodise on Monday evening, immediately following the altercation at the house. Lodise will reportedly go to court on Tuesday to address concerns about the children's well-being and safety.

Nate Dogg Leaves $200,000 In Real Estate To His six Children

Nate Dogg's six children will have to decide how to divide the $200,000 in real estate left by their father, who had no will.

According to TMZ, documents were filed in Los Angles Monday (July 23) on behalf of the late West Coast crooner, and attorney Alex Borden has been nominated by one of his daughters, to handle Nate's financial matters.

The number seems small, being that he was a staple in the music industry for over 20 years, but there is more potential money to be had.

Nate's musical catalog is expected to be added to the
final tally which will also go to his four daughters and two sons.

His home in Pamona, Calif. was worth a reported $350,000 but he still owed $150,000 on it, leaving the children to divvy up the remaining $200,000.

As it often happens when people die young, the estate has run into financial issues, like being sued for more than $290,000 over unpaid medical bills.

Nate passed away last March from complications brought on by multiple strokes. He was 41.

[Exclusive] Ghana president John Atta Mills dies

John Atta Mills, Ghana's president, has died a few hours after being taken ill, a statement from the president's office and officials said.

Mills, 68, died on Tuesday in the capital Accra and has been succeeded by Vice-President John Dramani Mahama who took the presidential oath hours after the death was announced.

The swift adherence to Ghana's constitution on succession underlines the country's reputation as one of the most mature democracies in the region, said commentators.

'Untimely death'

"It is with a heavy heart... that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," a statement sent to the Reuters news agency by the president's office said.

Mills, who had celebrated his 68th birthday last Saturday, had won international praise as leader of a stable model democracy in Africa. Ghana remains the only Sub Saharan country that Barack Obama, the US president, has visited as part of recognition for its democratic credentials.

The unexpected death of the leader of the world's second-largest producer of cocoa comes months before he was due to stand for re-election in December.

Ghana, also a major African gold producer, started pumping oil in 2010 and posted double-digit growth in 2011.

The president's office said that Mills died a few hours after being taken ill, but no further details were given.

A presidential aide, who asked not to be named, said the president had complained of pains on Monday evening and died early Tuesday afternoon when his condition worsened.

Mills had returned from medical checks in the United States a few weeks ago.

Upcoming elections

Ghana's election commission said Mills' death would not affect December's presidential and parliamentary elections.

"The election calendar remains unchanged - it's purely a party matter," Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the elections chief, told Reuters.

He said it was up to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to find a candidate to replace Mills.

Trained as a lawyer and taxation expert, Mills had overseen Ghana's emergence as one of Africa's newest oil producers two years ago, winning plaudits both at home and abroad for his sound economic policies and commitment to democracy and good governance.

In March, Obama received Mills in the Oval Office and praised him and his country as "a good-news story" in Africa.

Nii Akuetteh, an Africa commentator based in Washington, DC, told Al Jazeera Mills had been credited with Ghana's "serious economic growth".

He said Mills "signed strong economic agreements with China" and that his "influence goes back because he served as vice-president" during Jerry-Rawlings administration.

Previous rumours about Mills' possible ill-health had swirled in the last few weeks as he travelled last month to the US for medical treatment.

On that occasion, he had joked with reporters on his departure from Accra about rumours of his death, asking them: "Are you seeing a person who has died?"

Mills, who won a close-fought, two-round election in 2008 by beating off rival Nana Akufo-Addo of the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was preparing to bid for a second term in December's polls, once again against arch-foe Akufo-Addo.

Remembering Amy Winehouse: One Year Later

I remember the first time (and last) time I saw Amy Winehouse alive.

I was covering Lollapalooza  in 2007, and the main attraction at Chicago's Grant Park was none other than the British invasion herself.

Winehouse had long captivated fans across the pond with her raspy, often pain-stricken voice, but it wasn't until the release of 2006's Back to Black that America took notice on  a larger level.

As a music fan, I was excited to see the singer—who was the same age as me—take the stage. Unfortunately, what I witnessed was not the person that I had become a fan of, but a woman clearly on the fast track to destruction.

Winehouse  emerged with her signature bouffant, wearing a checkered dress and flats.

Although her voice was solid, throughout her set she appeared intoxicated, dangerously thin, and confused; there was even a point where she depended solely on her back-up singers to lead her, and while she tried to play it off, many of us realized that we were witnessing the beginning of her public downfall.

The next four years would bring personal and professional high and lows for Winehouse.
Winning the coveted Record of the Year and Song of the Year Grammy's in 2008, did little to help the songstress combat a losing battle with drug addiction, and the dilapidation of her marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil only made things worse.

The aforementioned relationship has been a sore spot for the Winehouse family, who have blamed him for the singer's foray into drugs.

Regardless of who is at fault, at the end of the day, the final choice was hers and hers alone, and while addiction is nothing short of a disease, as a fan I feel a mixture of both anger and sadness that she was not able to make it out on the other side.

Given her great talents, sadly, Winehouse's music was poised out live her. Like many of the greats who took the music industry by storm, she died at 27, joining the likes of musicians including Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix.

In honor of the first anniversary of Winehouse's death, we've compiled a few memorable photos of the late singer.

No one knows what she could have become if she were still alive, but rather than dwell on the silly predictions, it's important to celebrate the legacy she leaves behind.

Public Enemy Live @ Théatre National 2012

Public Enemy  Playing Friday 26/10/2012 @ Théatre National

Public Enemy rewrote the rules of hip-hop, becoming the most influential and controversial rap group of the late '80s and, for many, the definitive rap group of all time. Building from Run-D.M.C.'s street-oriented beats and Boogie Down Productions' proto-gangsta rhyming, Public Enemy pioneered a variation of hardcore rap that was musically and politically revolutionary.

With his powerful, authoritative baritone, lead rapper Chuck D rhymed about all kinds of social problems, particularly those plaguing the black community, often condoning revolutionary tactics and social activism. In the process, he directed hip-hop toward an explicitly self-aware, pro-black consciousness that became the culture's signature throughout the next decade.

Musically, Public Enemy was just as revolutionary, as their production team, the Bomb Squad, created dense soundscapes that relied on avant-garde cut-and-paste techniques, unrecognizable samples,
piercing sirens, relentless beats, and deep funk.

It was chaotic and invigorating music, made all the more intoxicating by Chuck D's forceful vocals and the absurdist raps of his comic foil, Flavor Flav. With his comic sunglasses and an oversized clock hanging from his neck, Flav became the group's visual focal point, but he never obscured the music. While rap and rock critics embraced the group's late-'80s and early-'90s records, Public Enemy frequently ran into controversy with their militant stance and lyrics, especially after their 1988 album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back made them into celebrities.

After all the controversy settled in the early '90s, once the group entered a hiatus, it became clear that Public Enemy was the most influential and radical band of their time.

De La Soul Live @ Théatre National 2012

De La Soul Playing Thursday 25/10/2012 @ Théatre National

« First Serve », De La Soul is back… well, sort of. Please pay attention, because this may get confusing. Plug 2/Dave and Plug 1/Pos of De La Soul have created First Serve, for which they take on the personas of aspiring rappers Deen Whitter and Jacob “Pop Life” Barrow.
The production and beats come to us from French Producers 2 & 4 (aka Chokolate & Kahlid). Got it?
First Serve is a concept album that centers on Whitter and Barrow’s trials and tribulations as they attempt to rise up from their parents’ basement to become rap stars. Upon first listen, one can’t help but think of frequent De La Soul collaborator Prince Paul’s classic album A Prince among Thieves. Both albums are glued together using the recently out-of-style hip-hop tool called the skit to propel the album’s narrative.

First Serve, unlike Paul’s album, isn’t so much a cautionary tale as it is a nostalgic celebration of hip-hop’s golden days.

James Holmes Made Racial Remarks About Rap

There is no country for James Eagan Holmes.

More details are emergeing about the 24 year-old, former PhD student who allegedly dressed like the Joker during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises and opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado; shooting and killing 12 while injuring dozens of others.

Reuters reports that Holmes lived a generally nondescript life, even having to work at McDonalds for a bit after being unable to land a gig after graduating from the University of California-Riverside. He also appears to have hated rap music, particularly Lil Wayne, and Black people. When not in school, Holmes would sometimes hang out on the stoop of his building, located in a part of Aurora where drugs and gunshots were not uncommon, according to one neighbor.

Police arrived at the apartment on Friday to find it booby-trapped with sophisticated explosives, creating a hazard for law-enforcement and bomb squad officers who swarmed to the building.

Near the scene, another neighbor, Rachel Reed, 25, recalled seeing Holmes a number of times on the stoop, with his backpack. A couple of months ago she ran into him at the Zephyr, where she had put a Lil Wayne rap song on the jukebox.

Holmes disapproved, she said, preferring rock 'n' roll music. He came over and "made some racially charged comments about rap," she said.

"He seemed like he was a normal dude," she said. "He was a little buzzed."

Yeah, totally normal. This psychopath needs to be buried ALL the way under the jail.

Our condolences go out to the families of all of the victims in this tragedy.

Estate Of Notorious B.I.G. Denies Connection To Men Arrested In Book Theft

Representatives for the estate of the Notorious B.I.G. have denied reports that they are connected with a musical about the rapper’s life, after two men were arrested in connection with a bizarre theft from a bookstore on Tuesday (July 17).

Writers Alfred Green and Raheim Pope had claimed they were producing a musical titled “Ready 2 Die,” which would focus on Notorious B.I.G.

Green and Pope were arrested for stealing $888 books from a Barnes & Noble in Westport, Connecticut.
The two men initially denied the stolen booty found in a Jaguar with Georgia plates was theirs.

At the station, a tip from Green lead to a cavity search of Pope, who had hidden the key to the getaway Jaguar in his rectum.

“Please note that this is an unauthorized play. Our firm has previously sent a cease and desist notice and any association with the Estate of Christopher Wallace or Notorious B.I.G. are unauthorized,”
Green and Pope issued a casting call for the unauthorized play back in March, but the estate warned B.I.G.’s fans that they are not supporting the musical.

“There is no connection or association between the Estate of Notorious B.I.G. and Alfred Green and Raheim Pope,”

No I.D. Speaks on Working With Nas on Life Is Good

Nas’ latest album, Life Is Good, is currently projected to sell 120,000 units and debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week.

The album, which came out this past Tuesday, is some of the Queens MC’s best work in years.

He remains a lyrical force and offers listeners a healthy array of content—from boasts to concepts to personally revealing moments.

Production legend No I.D., currently serving as executive vice president of Def Jam, worked extensively with Nas on the project, ultimately earning credits for five of the 14 songs. Here, No I.D. discusses their studio sessions, “Daughters,” and more. —As told to Adam Fleischer

We did some sessions before. I would say in the scope of really working with each other, we hadn’t worked with each other until now. Meaning, sit down talk, figure out direction, share ideas, and be on the same page. We got a really good work relationship now.

[We did] a lot of sessions together. A lot of those sessions was not even working on music, but really discussing where music is, where we wanna go, why we wanna go there, how. It was a lot of sharing. He’s like a vault of hip-hop information within himself. Everything that we did, it wasn’t on accident. The discussions made the music.

I don’t remember exactly [how "Daughters" came about], but I’m pretty sure that he came up with it and then we worked on the concept. The beat came, and he just starts to lay verses. He laid a couple verses. We had a lot of talks about Marvin Gaye’s Here My Dear album. One of the things that I was stressing to him was, I feel like Nas fans are Nas fans.

They care about Nas. They don’t care about what’s current, they don’t care about what’s in the club. With him not being a guy that you see on TMZ and on the blog sites often, I felt like, “Hey man, you gotta let people know you.”

That was probably most important to me, to let even the younger kids that missed all the great things he did because they were too young, let ‘em know who he is, what he’s thinking, where he’s at, how he feels.

Battle Over Rick Ross Name In Court

The legal battle over the name “Rick Ross” rages on between “Freeway” Rick Ross and rapper Rick Ross, who owns the trademark to the name.

On Tuesday (July 17), a federal judge ruled that the case could continue in court.

According to the latest ruling, Freeway Rick can pursue Warner Brothers, since Rick Ross and his record label Maybach Music Group have a deal with the label.

According to the judge presiding over the case, Freeway Ricky has 10 days to amend his lawsuit, against Warner Brothers, for false advertising, unjust enrichment, and unfair business practice.

Freeway Ricky Ross has been battling rapper Rick Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II, in court, since 2010.
Freeway Ricky filed his first lawsuit against the rapper in June of 2010, in hopes of preventing him from using and exploiting, his birth name.

Freeway Rick claims that the rapper co-opted his name and likeness as a former drug kingpin and parlayed it into a successful rap career.

Freeway Ricky Ross is an urban legend, who had a drug empire that earned as much as $2 million per day.
Additionally, Freeway Ricky has been the subject of numerous articles in regards to the Iran-Contra scandal and he ha been featured on popular television shows like “American Gangster.”

But the rap star came out on the victorious end of two separate lawsuits, one in federal court and another, appeal in state court.

In the first ruling, the judge ruled that Freeway Rick could not capitalize on his own name, since it was built off of committing real crimes.

The state ruled that a statute of limitations on the allegations helped the rapper get the case dismissed from court.

To make matters worse, rapper Rick Ross received a federal trademark for the name, which he has used in commerce since his 2006 debut, Port of Miami.

Female Rapper Ms. Melodie Confirmed Dead

The Boogie Down Productions affiliate and onetime wife to KRS-One has reportedly died. Details are still emerging.

Ms. Melodie (a/k/a Romona Parker) of Boogie Down Productions fame has been confirmed dead this afternoon. Anonymous sources confirmed the tragic news to TheUrbanDaily.com, although the cause and details are still unknown.

In addition to releasing 1989's Diva on Jive/Zomba Records, Melodie, a Brooklyn, New York native, appeared on "Self Destruction" from the Stop The Violence Movement. She also appeared on Queen Latifah's hit "Ladies First." A longtime affiliate of B.D.P., Melodie was also the first wife of the group's front-man, KRS-One. When the pair split in the early 1990s, Melodie stepped away from Hip Hop, as Boogie Down Productions spawned the solo careers of KRS, D-Nice and others.

Melodie's passing comes less than two weeks after another late 1980s alum, KMG from Above The Law, also died.

Our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Ms. Melodie.

Coolio’s Son Going To Prison For Kidnapping And Robbery

Grtis Ivey is the 22-year-old son of rapper Coolio. He has been sentenced to nearly 4 years in jail on charges related to kidnapping and robbery.

Ivey was arrested on November 14, 2011 and charged after the beating and robbing of a resident in a Las Vegas apartment complex, TMZ reports.

At that time, Ivey entered the home with a gun and a female prostitute accomplice, who helped rob the person.

Ivey agreed to a plea deal and plead guilty to a felony robbery charge and, in exchange, police dropped four additional felony charges that were levied against him.

He will serve at least 3.5 years in jail and up to 10 years, depending on the judges discretion.

A judge will formally sentence him on September 12.

Young Buck Sentenced to 3 Years in Jail.

Multi-platinum rapper Young Buck was sentenced Friday to three years in prison after he was convicted on weapons charges.

Young Buck, a Nashville native whose real name is David Darnell Brown, was arrested for possessing weapons despite being a convicted felon following a stabbing several years prior.

The judge sentenced the rapper to serve his two counts concurrently, so he will spend a total of 18 months in jail.

Young Buck is also involved in a bankruptcy case after a contract dispute with record label G-Unit Records.

Numerous pieces of gold and diamond jewelry once owned by the rapper will be auctioned by the IRS on July 26.

In December, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in Nashville converted the rapper's bankruptcy case from a Chapter 11 reorganization to a Chapter 7 liquidation. The trustee administering his estate said she planned to sell the trademarked "Young Buck" name along with other assets seized for non-payment.

Beanie Sigel Sentenced To Prison Over Taxes

Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel will spend the next 24 months in federal prison, for failing to file income tax returns.

Beanie Sigel, born Dwight Grant, is being ordered to pay the IRS $728,536, for taxes on six years of income, from 1999-2005.

In April of 2012, Beanie Sigel pleaded guilty to three counts of failure to file income tax returns.
In total, Beanie Sigel earned over $2.2 million in taxable income during those years, yet he only paid $10,000 in taxes.

Part of the prison sentence was due to Beanie’s conduct, according to the sentencing memorandum.
The IRS accused the rapper of failing to cooperate with his probation officer’s attempts to determine his financial condition.

“For all we know, Grant has earned a significant sum of money and simply squirreled it away out of the reach of the government,” the sentencing memorandum reads. “He would not even cooperate with the probation officer to permit a home visit, a most basic part of the pre-sentencing procedure.”

The sentencing was also based on the rapper’s previous convictions and “his overall poor criminal history.”

According to the government, Beanie Sigel began his criminal life at the age of 15 and 23 years later, despite being a world-renowned artist, continues to run into trouble with the law.

The prison sentence comes as Beanie Sigel was mounting a comeback in his recording career.

In March of 2012, the rapper inked a deal with Chris Schwartz’s new record label through EMI and released a mixtape titled “Broad Street Empire Vol.1: Lost Files.”

Beanie Sigel was also working on an album of all new material titled The Classic.
So far, representatives for Beanie Sigel have yet to comment.

Lord Finesse Suing Mac Miller, Rostrum Records and DatPiff For $10 Million

Hip-Hop icon, producer and founder of the D.I.T.C. rap crew Lord Finesse is suing Mac Miller for $10 million for reportedly using the beat to his 1995 song “Hip 2 the Game,” which the producer claims essentially launched the 20-year old Pittsburgh native’s career.
According to reports, the $10 million suit, which alleges “copyright infringement, unfair competition, unjust enrichment, interference, deceptive trade practices, and a number of related state law claims, was filed in a New York federal court on Monday (July 9) against Mac,
The rapper has seen immense success since the release of his first mixtape, K.I.D.S., hit the internet in 2010.
The suit states that the case is “about a teenage rapper – Mac Miller -copying the music from a song written, produced and performed by Lord Finesse, a Hip-Hop legend, changing the title and then distributing it under his own name in order to launch his music career.”
Finesses’ “Hip 2 the Game” was the same beat used on Mac’s “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza” from K.I.D.S. which was the song that’s mostly credited as initially getting Mac attention as an artist when he first hit the scene.
Robert “Lord Finesse” Hall has also sued DatPiff.com, the website which initially made the mixtape available for download upon its release as well as the independent label of Rostrum Records which signed Mac Miller in 2010.
As of the time the suit was filed, the music video for Mac’s “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza” had been viewed over 24 million times on YouTube while his K.I.D.S. mixtape has been downloaded over half a million times since its release.
Finesse is stating that Mac, whose real name is Malcolm McCormick, has “profited from the unauthorized use of the song.” The recently filed lawsuit cites a New York Timesarticle from November of 2011 where Mac explained how the alleged infringement is “part of a strategy to build a fan base.”
According to the Times article, “A new generation of rappers is actively trying to build a new business model in which releasing oodles of free material online builds a fan base that paves the way for revenue streams: touring, merchandise, even something as old-fashioned as a record deal.
Finesse, who is being represented by Brian Levenson and Matthew Schwartz of Schwartz & Ponterio, has publicly stated that he filed the lawsuit against Mac, DatPiff.com and Rostrum Records after all three parties “refused to respond to a cease and desist letter that was issued earlier this month.
More information will be released as the story develops.
